Our story
During a live boxing match, the CEO of ESP Mouthguards witnessed a moment that would redefine his understanding of communication between the coach and athlete. Inside the arena, the crowd was deafening. The boxer, trapped in the intensity of the moment, could not hear his coach’s instructions. His opponent, positioned closer to their corner, received clear guidance and tactical control. What followed was not simply a physical mismatch it was a communication failure / barrier that dramatically altered the outcome of the fight.
A second moment reinforced this reality. While watching a championship-level mixed martial arts bout featuring a local hometown fighter, the CEO observed the coach urgently calling out a specific combination a standard but highly effective move requiring precise timing. However, the command was projected into the open air. The opponent heard and anticipated it. And immediately prepared a counter. The moment the move was executed, it was met with a perfectly timed defensive response, leading to a decisive strike that ended the bout and the fighter’s opportunity to bring the championship belt home.
In that instant, a truth became undeniable:
Athletes were losing not because of lack of skill but because their communication was blocked, exposed, and ineffective.
The realization
